Three months ago, graphic designer Vanessa Hewitt slept with the ridiculously hot guy she met after nearly falling to her death while stargazing on a bridge. The adrenaline-fueled night of we’ll-never-see-each-other-again sex fulfilled every fantasy, but with her best friend’s wedding on the horizon, Vanessa can’t stop thinking about what would happen if her sexy stranger passed through town again.

Haunted by his time in Afghanistan, soldier John Campbell returns to his hometown just long enough to help plan an engagement party for his sister. When he realizes her best friend is the sweet one-night stand he’s been fantasizing about for months, he’ll do anything to have her again…though getting trapped together in a storeroom wasn’t quite what he had in mind.

Vanessa is in hell. Or is it heaven? Because with every touch, their forbidden connection grows, until kissing Mr. Wrong starts feeling more like kissing Mr. Right…

Dear Jess, I know Vanessa is your best friend and John is your brother, but Breaking News: it’s not about you!

Every time I read a brother/sister’s best friend romance, I always feel like poking the angry sibling in the arm and reminding them that this thing is between two consenting adults, of which they aren’t one, so butt out and get over themselves! I definitely felt like doing that to Jess here, although there are other things at work that explain some of her reaction. However, since this book really isn’t about Jess, time to talk about what the people it is.

Vanessa and John are so cute together. What might start out as a heroic deed turned hot one night stand is complicated by John’s return three months later to help with his sister’s wedding. Which is when they both realise that they have said sister in common, since she’s also Vanessa best friend and Vanessa recently promised her not to crush on her younger brother. Oops!

Despite their swift first meeting and the awkwardness of their second, there’s a lot of sweetness to be found in this story. Vanessa is an artist who has no confidence in her talent, John is a soldier who has lost faith in himself, but together they find comfort and healing, both in talk and touch. I really liked how they coax confessions out of each other without even realising what they’re doing. They are surprisingly similar in some ways and also have plenty of chemistry to keep things humming along, especially when the subject of Jess is laid to one side.

In all this is a cute, easy, enjoyable read with plenty of humour and heat, and a bonus exploration of family and what that means to different people. John is troubled without being completely tormented, while Vanessa is straight-forward and nice, and though their attraction might be instant I could believe that more would grow from it. Good for a quick, feel-good read. I hope the references to John’s friend Lance mean there’s more to come from this setting soon.
