Under his protection and in his bed…
For Fallon Wayland, birthdays are just another reminder of her looming spinsterhood. This year is shaping up to be no different. Unfairly fired from her job, dumped by her boyfriend, and oh yes, witnessing the murder of a high-ranking lieutenant in the local crime family… Yeah, birthdays suck.
Ever since a disastrous, hot-as-hell kiss years ago, soldier-turned-security specialist Shane Roarke has avoided his baby sister’s reckless—and gorgeous—best friend. Yet when her life is threatened after she witnesses a gang hit, he insists on protecting her…even if she objects.
The two are forced to hole up in a safe house. Alone. Passion long denied erupts between them, burning away their inhibitions. But even as layers—and clothes—are peeled away, danger closes in. Shane and Fallon might finally have a chance at love…if they survive long enough to see it.

Want something hot and sexy where people get shot at a lot? Looking for a heroine who is smart and independent, but also clever enough to know when to trust the protective sexy guy? Then this book should tick all the right boxes. Also, if you think you have a good reason to hate birthdays, you’ll definitely have something in common with Fallon.
I really enjoyed this story, especially how it could go from making me laugh one moment to heart-in-mouth speed reading the next. The action is swift and often unexpected, it delights in sudden twists and features two interesting characters with bad childhoods and a smoking hot attraction. I liked Fallon, she’s funny and gutsy, and has more than a few commitment issues. Fed up of being neglected and left, she’s decided that the only person she can rely on is herself and is determined to make the most of her life. Until she witnesses the murder, of course.
Enter Shane, the man she’s been in love with since she was a teenager, and who has no intention of getting too close to his little sister’s best friend. The trouble is that Shane’s not exactly immune to Fallon’s charms. He also has plenty of issues left over from his own childhood, but they make him long for commitment and family instead of running away from it. He and Fallon are pretty different on the outside, but deep down they’re both passionate, serious and focused on their goals. I loved seeing their dance play out and how Fallon wriggled her way past his defences.
Aside from the romance, the crime and danger plot plays out quite nicely, keeping things tense and difficult throughout. It adds a nice layer of suspense and tension to off-set the smoking hot sex and also introduced a few interesting other characters. When combined with an alpha male who’s not a complete jerk and an independent heroine who doesn’t pull stupid stunts, this book was a great read – funny, sexy and action-packed. And the ending had me grinning like a fool. I definitely want to read more from this author and this series.
