Billionaire Lucas Oliver is hell bent on revenge. And his plan begins when Sydney Blake—the stunning daughter of his enemy—is tricked into bidding on Lucas at a bachelor auction. Then he serves up a little blackmail…followed by a marriage proposal Sydney has no choice but to accept.
Sydney has been controlled by her family her whole life. When Lucas threatens to reveal her father’s shady business, she is once again forced to do her duty for her family. But worse—oh so much worse—is the rush of lust that Lucas ignites in her blood.
Lucas is determined to make Sydney suffer, but it’s tough when he can’t keep from touching her–or thinking about touching her–all the time. She’s not fairing much better since she’s engaged to a darkly handsome beast intent on destroying her entire family…along with her heart.

I don’t tend to have much patience for billionaire revenge novels these days (Argh, you ruined my life, so now I have become unimaginably wealthy just to destroy you. Did I mention that you ruined my life? (Even though I am now rich beyond my wildest dreams and can buy any life I want.) Because you did. Ruined it. Utterly. I am a wasteland. Just a really, really rich one), but the last book I read by this author was so much fun I went for it anyway. And I’m glad I did.
Oh, Sydney, dear, dear, Sydney. Yes, she’s a doormat, yes, she has no self-esteem, yes, she seems to aid everyone in doing this to her by keeping herself down, and yet I really, really liked her. I loved the way she stands up to Lucas and how, despite her insecurity issues, she doesn’t simply accept her fate. Sure, she lets her parents treat her appallingly, but there are reasons, and I really liked that she has a very strong core of loyalty and ethics.
As for Lucas, well, he’s a typical alpha out for revenge. However, the bit I normally hate about these stories is how the hero dupes the heroine for so long before the truth inevitably comes out just as the pair find real happiness so that it can cause the most amount of drama. Not so here. Lucas may be dark and broody and beastly in intention, but he’s not a liar. He’s not always big on trust and sharing details, but I really appreciated that he doesn’t string Sydney along. I also liked that he saw and admired the strength in her, even if he did blackmail her to assist with his evil deeds.
If you’re a fan of this sub-genre, you should definitely enjoy this because it keeps to the spirit of the trope without turning either character into a two-dimensional cliché. If you’re less fond of blackmail and rich people tantrums, then you still might find things to enjoy here. Namely a heroine who may be quiet and used to taking verbal abuse from all sides, but who also has her own hidden strengths and isn’t afraid to take on the challenge of her alpha man. Overall this is easy and enjoyable, with plenty of chemistry and sexy heat to spice up the romance. I hope this isn’t the last bachelor we’ll see from this auction.
