LOVE BETWEEN THE LINES

Romance has never had a happy ending for librarian Penny Callahan, who could write the book on cheating, heartbreaking liars. So she’s made a resolution: no men for the next twelve months. If she can just get through the library’s New Year’s Eve singles night, she can return home to her pajamas and a good book. But when she finds herself checking out a hot hunk with an irresistible smile, an evening in the stacks becomes a lot more tempting…

Reclusive author Jack Williamson never should have trusted his mother. Even though he’s trying to avoid being recognized, she guilts him into attending a dating meet-and-greet—where an adorable librarian makes him question his lonely lifestyle. Is this just a fleeting, flirty scene? Or could love be the next chapter for them both?

This is a cute, very quick read with an unexpectedly saucy undertone as a singles’ New Year night at the library takes a very naughty twist. Neither Penny nor Jack want to be there, but Penny is working as a favour to her friend and Jack’s there to keep an eye on his mother. What follows are some fun and risqué games and lots of lusty thoughts that explode into something pretty serious in a very short amount of time.

I have to admit that much as I enjoyed this book, the time line is way too fast for me. Jack spends the first hour of the night scowling and annoyed at what he’s been roped into, while blaming Penny for all the nonsense. Until he suddenly realises Penny isn’t to blame, then he thinks she’s hot and over the course of the next few hours pretty much falls in love with her. As for Penny, well, Jack’s hot but she can’t see why he’d want her. Especially as she’s sworn off men for being untrustworthy liars who treat her like dirt.

Of course, Jack has a secret – his writing career – which he has good reasons for keeping under wraps. So, obviously, that’s not going to come back and bite him. Much.

Both characters have good reasons for their trust issues, but because everything in this story happens so swiftly – and Penny tells a few fibs of her own to get what she wants – I have to admit I found the fallout a little overblown. Yes, yes, he didn’t tell you, but you’ve known each other for six hours. Maybe you moved a bit fast and should get to know each other a bit better before… oh, okay, apparently not. Way to be an adult, Penny.

So fast and fun, but perhaps a little too fast for me to really get behind Penny’s emotions. I enjoyed it overall, but Penny’s behaviour at the end was too much of an overreaction for me. However, it definitely left me wanting more from both this author and this series, especially regarding Angie the very naughty librarian. So, if you’re looking for something quick and funny with a touch of unexpected heat, this definitely fits the bill – especially if you can suspend your disbelief over just how swiftly everything happens.
