The battle of survival against the invading aliens heats up…but Hell Squad never quits.

General Adam Holmes’ life is dedicated to keeping his small band of survivors alive. On the run, with only Hell Squad and the other soldiers for protection, they are making their last dangerous drive to the secret stronghold of the Enclave. But there are a lot of aliens between them and their destination, and the survivors are tired, worn, and at the end of their limits. Adam feels the pressure dragging him down, but as their leader, he can’t be their friend and he can’t dump his burden on anyone else.

Long before the alien invasion, Liberty Lawler survived her own personal hell. Since then, she’s vowed to enjoy everything life has to offer and she’s managed to do that, even in the middle of an apocalypse. She does what she can to help the survivors in her convoy, but one man holds himself apart, working tirelessly for them all. Liberty can see Adam is at his breaking point and she vows to tear through his rigid control and save him from himself.

But the aliens are throwing everything they have at the humans, trying to stop them from reaching the Enclave. Adam will find his resolve tested and the pressure higher than ever. But it will be one beautiful woman—one who won’t take no for an answer and who worms under his skin—who can save them all and give him the strength to go on.

Note to readers: This sci fi romance contains a lot of action (think invading aliens, vicious creatures and dangerous missions), tough warriors (the sexy, battle-hardened soldiers of Hell Squad) and a steamy romance (lots of sexy times between a fearless general and a determined, headstrong blonde). So if you like it fast, and gritty, and sexy, this is for you!

There’s never a dull moment in this latest Hell Squad adventure, with the Swift Wind convoy making a last ditch dash for the sanctuary of the Enclave – but first they have to cross open, exposed ground, making them vulnerable to attack from the murderous Gizzida. At the heart of it all is General Adam Holmes, a strong stalwart who has held his band of survivors together through sheer determination up to this point. But he’s a man who holds himself apart from all the others, one who keeps himself isolated and has no one to turn to when tough decisions haunt him.

Until now.

Still waters definitely run deep when it comes to Adam, but in Liberty he has finally met his match. To many she’s a beautiful woman who flits about making people smile and somehow tracking down small, seemingly unnecessary, items on the black market – like shampoo or make up or a favourite brand of whiskey. But there’s nothing fluffy or superfluous about Liberty. In her own way she’s every bit as strong, determined and vital to the survivors as Adam is. He protects them and cares for their bodies, while Liberty cheers them and cares for their hearts.

Why wouldn’t these two be perfect for each other? It’s completely obvious when you think about it, and luckily Liberty realises this too. Which is very fortunate because she’s the kind of woman who goes after what she wants, even when Adam is rather, er, adamant that he needs to be an island. Which would be a shame, because when this general lets down his guard – Whew! Who knew he was hiding all that under his starchy uniforms?

As with every Hell Squad book (well, everything written by Anna Hackett), the romance is a gorgeous blend of strengths and weaknesses that mean the characters compliment each other and form a true partnership. Liberty brings softness to Adam, while he admires her strengths and reinforces her self-confidence. They are survivors, they are battered and rather bruised, but together they are formidable. And around them is a cast of incredible characters that make this book – and series – a joy to read.

This time around the action comes in a series of waves as the Gizzida try everything they can to find the convoy and stop them from reaching the Enclave. There are new and even more frightening critters to face and plenty of psychological warfare to deal with, as the war between humans and aliens ramps up yet another level. Humanity may be beaten, but they’re not broken yet and I love the building sense of trouble that the Gizzida are storing up for themselves.

The thing I love most, though? Tane. Oh, my, Tane. I love that man. Team Tane all the way here. I cannot wait for when his story rolls around.

In the meantime, this is another wonderful addition to this five star series. (So why doesn’t this have five stars? I’m saving it for Tane, of course. And probably Finn too.) If you like action and adventure mixed in with compelling romance that’s also super hot, then this is the author for you. If you haven’t tried this series yet (or the Phoenix Adventures), do so. It’s addictive and exciting and so, so worth it. Besides, the next book looks like it’s gonna be another goody (though sadly not Tane, but you can’t have everything).
