The pressure has never been more intense for Rough Riders’ star defenseman Beckett Croft. With his contact expiring, Beckett has to live up to his badass reputation every minute of every game to earn the next big deal. A deal that will secure a stable home for his five-year-old daughter. So when an injury on the ice threatens to send him to the ER, he fights protocol—until the feisty EMT refuses to take no for an answer. Beckett likes his women assertive, and the spark between them is nothing short of scorching. Her indifference to his fame and money only intrigues him more. And by the time he peeks beneath her tightly sealed edges to see her beautiful but deeply wounded soul, he’s in way too deep to pull back.

After years of shutting herself off from men, Eden is tempted by the heat that blazes when she is around the NHL’s most notorious bad boy—even toying with an inkling of “what if”. But life has taught her how painfully that kind of fire burns. And how deeply it scars. So Eden denies the spark room to grow, the same way she shut out the violence from her past, focusing instead on her career and finishing paramedic school. She’ll never rely on a man for money or security again.

But when the heat between them becomes too hot to ignore, one night isn’t enough. Soon, Beckett and Eden find themselves caught between desire and fear—with painful pasts pulling them in one direction and a fragile new love pulling them in another. All while the family and careers that matter most hang in the balance.

Now this is the kind of hot, sexy, emotional, exciting read I’ve come to expect from this author. Eden is a strong woman who has had it tough at times, but she’s also smart and not afraid to take Beckett on when he gets flirty with her. As for Beckett… wow. Sure, he starts off a bit mouthy and arrogant, but anyone who loves his baby girl the way he does is nothing but gorgeous in my eyes.

While the first book in this series (Quick Trick) didn’t really have much to do with hockey, this one does. Not so much that non-fans of the sport will get bored or confused, but definitely enough to show why Bennett is the way he is and the impact it has had on his life. He’s competitive and cocky, but he’s not stupid, he knows how to value the important things and has a great support system in his family that means he’s pretty grounded.

The romance is scorching. It starts with a hard-won flirt and escalates from there. Eden isn’t afraid of making Bennett work for her attention, but likewise, he’s not afraid of pursuing a good thing when he finds it. Their chemistry is hot and the sex is everything you’d expect from Skye Jordan’s books.

This is about more than just romance, though. There’s love and family and trust and all kinds of emotional wrenches here and there. I also really liked that Eden loves her career and is working to make herself even better throughout – and Bennett is happy to support her with that. They’re a really good team and I loved how they grew closer.

If I had one teeny bugbear it was Lily’s mother, Kim. She’s a complete cliché with no redeeming qualities. Might have been nice to have had a few more shades of grey where she was concerned.

Overall, though, this was great. Sexy, exciting, emotional and down right enjoyable. I cannot wait to see where this series heads next.
