Headstrong cowgirl Peta Dixon has put her life on hold this Christmas to prove she can run her ranch as well as any man. There isn’t anything she can’t ride, fix, or stare down, and the only things to scare her are long hemlines and sky-high heels.

Self-made rancher Garrett Ross normally doesn’t take orders – he gives them. But when asked to step in to act as a temporary foreman on a Montana ranch over the holidays, he can’t refuse.

Yet when Garrett meets the beautiful and stubborn ranch owner, he realizes he’s signed on for a whole lot of trouble. Cynical and jaded, he has no time for feelings. And when Peta meets the man she’s to share her life with until Christmas, she discovers she no longer wants to be the person others expect her to be…

Will the rancher finally listen to his heart and admit he can’t live without a certain straight-talking cowgirl?

There’s nothing quite like jumping to the wrong conclusions when you meet someone for the first time. Peta has been a working rancher all her life, with no time for girly things. However, after accompanying her little sister abroad for an extended holiday, Peta’s learnt that there are some things about being female that she can enjoy, and she returns home full of confidence.

Where she meets Garrett, who instantly pegs her as high maintenance, while she views him as arrogant. I don’t think Peta was completely wrong about that, since Garrett definitely has a high-handed approach to being her ranch foreman. True, he’s used to being his own boss, but I would have liked it if Peta had been able to stand her ground a few times and prove that she knew just as much as he did about riding her land and taking care of her stock.

Not that it really matters, because of course Garrett learns that he was wrong. In fact he changes his mind a little too swiftly for me, but it mostly works out, leaving this to be an enjoyable tale about two stubborn, independent people slowly accepting that they’ve met their match. Although, again, when the realisation actually happens, it seems to come pretty swiftly from nowhere. Still, on the whole it’s a good read and I really liked the lack of unnecessary angst.

If you’re a fan of this series, you’ll enjoy getting to see the old characters again. If you like Marietta, then there are plenty of familiar faces and places to make you feel at home. And if you’re completely new to all of this, well, hopefully you’ll be able to settle in without too much confusion as to who everyone belongs with. If you like cowboys and cowgirls, working ranch life and a community Christmas spirit, then you will find something here to enjoy, there’s even a glamorous ball to attend. On the whole, I found the romance pleasant rather than absorbing, but it was great to see Peta finally get her own chance at love. Another enjoyable addition to the Wildflower Ranch series, and if it’s the end, then it certainly sends everyone off in fine style.
